Delivering the ChCh Rebuild

3 April 2013

The Productivity Partnership shared a forward view of major construction projects in Canterbury at a Construction Clients Group meeting in Christchurch on 27 March.

The Canterbury Procurement Pipeline identifies upcoming government and and local government construction projects planned up to the end of 2016.  It has been developed to give visibility to peak demand for resources, including materials and labour, so the work programme can be managed more effectively.

Productivity Partnership Programme Director Pete Cunningham discussed the potential impact of the Canterbury Procurement Pipeline on supply side capacity. The Partnership’s Secretariat Manager Chris Kane talked about the benefits of introducing a Rebuild Christchurch Construction Charter, which is a proposed code of conduct for Canterbury Rebuild clients. It includes a commitment to best practice and collaboration with all relevant organisations, and is based on similar agreements made to successfully deliver the London Olympics in 2012.

“Our presentations were about managing expectations,” says Chris Kane. “People were appreciative of the heads-up on the size of the future workload and the feedback was that it was very valuable information to have.  There was widespread support for the concept of a Construction Charter.”
